A. KERVAN Psy. D
"I hold a
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with Health and Clinical
Psychology, and a Master of Science Degree in Applied
Behavior Analysis. I have been providing services since 1992.
I am licensed and a board member of the International Psychology Association. I have worked in a variety of mental health clinics
and hospitals in New York, and have treated clients diverse in ethnicity, age, sexual
orientation, socio-economic status, gender, and life circumstances.
As a clinical psychologist, I frequently treat
individuals with histories of trauma/abuse, depression, anxiety/fear/panic,
relationship problems, career issues, grief/loss, and other concerns like
loneliness, personal growth, low self-esteem, and dealing with the effects of
growing up in a dysfunctional family. My areas of specialty include substance
use problems, addictions, and recovery; compulsive sexual behavior; coming
out/sexual orientation issues; and HIV/AIDS-related issues.
In my work with couples I often focus on
communication problems, dysfunctional patterns, sexual problems,
infidelity/trust, and issues that leave couples feeling less connected,
harmonious, and satisfied with their relationship. I work with families to
address a variety of concerns including behavior problems, parent/child
conflicts, life transitions (e.g. divorce, re-marriage, and blended family
issues), and parenting skills.
My approach to treatment draws from psychodynamic, systems, and
cognitive-behavioral theory. I tailor my approach depending
on your goals, how long you want to be in therapy, and the severity of the
issues involved. My style is warm, engaging, and goal-oriented. I am
told that my style is a welcome change for the client whose previous therapist
“didn’t say much”, “didn’t offer feedback”, or just “listened to me talk and
didn’t help me get anywhere.”
I am well known as
the best
selling author of Brightening the Blues and other 18 books on various topics
including psychotherapy, relationships, sexual and emotional abuses, lesbian and
gay issues, addictions and body image those have been translated into
14 foreign languages.
My self-help book, “Mission: Depression”, has been
endorsed by the Ist. Psychology Association for use in their
nation wide campaign to combat clinical depression.
Until a few short years ago, assessment and therapy were only
performed in an office setting utilizing face to face
interventions and assessment techniques. The new digital era
has brought a wonderful experience to this endeavor so I
have started performing online therapy sessions for my disabled
clients in 1999. Since then I have met people with so many
reasons seeking a flexible and convenient
advice ... Some of them had concerns about being seen walking
into my office or bumping into a friend as they leave, some of
them needed to interact with me without having to take time off
of work or make up excuses as to where they are going. For some,
parking was great trouble when coming to me. Some of them were
too much worried about the cost; the fee for an
traditional therapy was higher than that of an online session...
It was 2001 when I started to offer my professional service to
anyone who needed an expert advice fast and easily via internet.
I provide
my professional
expertise, specialized techniques for mental health.
